Favorite Quotes Friday -- The Motherless Child Project

Today's quote is about food, which I have been thinking about frequently with the start of my new diet, and comes from one of my audiobooks, The Motherless Child Project by Janie McQeen and Robin Karr.

I'm sure all my writer friends can relate to this -- "Besides, anyone with an Internet connection feels they have the credentials to critique or belittle anything these days."  -- Mrs. Peters in The Enchantress Returns by Chris Colfer

Monthly Mentoring - Featuring Faff Camp

This month for my mentoring section I will recap all I learned at Faff Camp, that was held in my home town this year. Of course I should state as a disclaimer that this was what I got of the conference, so any errors are the students' (mine) not the teachers'.

The most important thing I came away with was that the voiceover business is filled with caring and compassionate folks. I could not get over the environment of sharing knowledge, everyone was ready to help their colleagues. I definitely recommend this experience. I will be sharing the breakout sections that I took and a short synopsis from each but, you can tailor your experience at Faff Camp by participating in topics that you are interested in.

Your VO Business is Naked Without a Marketing Plan by Peter O'Connell

  • Your marketing plan should be 3 to 4 months ahead of what you need
  • Have a workable database with client/potential client information
  • When you are doing any marketing make sure you know who is your audience and what do they want
  • Marketing isn't always free but it can be

Effective, Efficient Voiceover Marketing with Social Media by Heather Costa

  • The key to social media, is having a presence, posting relevant information while adding your own personal touch and engaging with your followers
  • There are many different types of social media pick 2 or 3 that are your main focus
  • Keep track of which business have and use social media
  • The key to successfully using social media is get in, get out and make the most of your time while you are there
  • Remember it's not just about marketing yourself, but building relationships and sharing the content of others too

How Not to Suck at ACX by Jeffery Kaffer
  • Be selective about what you audition for
  • Label your demo samples with what is happening not the title of the book (ex: male/female dialog)
  • Have clear expectations with author up front (he does not accept direction after the first 15 minutes is approved)
  • Look for potential authors outside of ACX and then bring them into ACX
  • Note: The link on Jeffery's name takes you to a facebook group where he is a frequent contributor to discussions

Are Audiobooks for You? by Bob Souer
  • If you decide that audiobooks are for you join Audiobook Publishers Association and attend the conference
  • Tips for networking: don't be pushy, talk to people then ask for their card, after conference follow up with email and your contact information, don't shove your business card at people

VO Production - Compression, EQ, Effects and Music ... Demystified by Dan Friedman
  • I am not going to do justice to this topic and I do recommend getting Dan's book
  • The first thing you should do every day is do a take for levels
  • When compressing you should have a fast attack and a slow release
  • Don't try to cover bad reading with effects, the first step is to have a good reading

It's impossible to share everything I learned in one small blog post so my recommendation to you is join us next time at Faff Camp or Faff Con .

When I was reading to my husband the other night (yes we have story time at our house) found this great quote in the new Anna & Charles book. "Without magic, he had no savor." So this quote is dedicated to my husband who is my magic AND my savor.
