“Ah, here you are again,” said the friendly ladybug. “You must be hungry. There are still some aphids left. You can have them for dinner.” “Oh, thank you,” said the wet, tired, and hungry ladybug.

For this month's mentoring feature I would like to talk about what I learned at the Audio Publishers Association Conference, APAC. First and foremost, I learned it was invaluable to join the Association and attend the conference. I was able to meet and talk to industry professionals, namely publishers, and take classes focused on honing my professional skills. If you would like to learn more about what is included with APA membership here is a link to the APA website. I was also able to meet past Monthly Mentoring people, Karen Commins and Pearl Hewitt, in person, which was a real treat!
Quite honestly the experience is impossible to distill in a few short sentences but, the main conclusion is this: JUST GO! (Good news next year it is being held in more pocketbook friendly Chicago). However, this piece is not mentoring if I don't share what I learned. So without further ado a short list of musts for narrators:
"At the last car, I waited, listening the way I'd been taught - wait till the clack of the train wheels slows to the rhythm of your heartbeat. The trouble is my heartbeat speeds up when I'm looking at the ground rushing by. Finally, I saw a grassy spot and jumped. The ground came quick and hard, but I landed and rolled as the train lumbered on without a thank-you or goodbye."
"There were jars of honey for sale, big cages of butterflies stacked together, baskets of different kinds of gems on the front counter, lilac and rosemary bushes on one side of the wall with bags of river rocks on the other. Tons of herbs, peppermint, licorice roots, berries, mushrooms, walnuts, tree bark and rain water in jars that were strewn about. Lightning bugs flew around a sign on the wall saying, "One firefly per visit."
