"What's a hipster?" asked my four year old cousin. "Someone who will wear something just to look different," I said. "They'll often buy clothes in thrift shops and wear thick glasses." "Is Grandma a hipster?" he asked. -- Eyesha Sadiq

At the supermarket checkout the cashier was having trouble finding the price for my cucumber. "Maybe the list is alphabetical," I offered. So he started searching from the bottom of the list: "Q...Q...Q..."  - Charity McTarsney

Peri cocked her head and put her hands on her hips. “Who said I wanted to? I’ll just hang out here for the report.”

As he began to walk away, she stopped him. “Maybe you could find one or two small things in there that weren’t burnt.”

“Why?”

“I was just thinking, if we could give Benny something that was saved from the fire, it might mean the difference between a meltdown and a straightjacket.”

“Most people’s summer houses are on the lake,” I corrected, gathering steam from my anger. “You know, on the lake there’s a ton of skiing and night life and stuff. Usually the only people who come out here are, like, old people.” I hated myself as I groped for approval from these kids, but I also couldn’t stop. “I tried to convince my parents to get a house on the lake instead, but, you know parents. Really boring. Wanted to come out here.”

I rushed to my underwear drawer and jerked it open. "I made copies of the code. And that's not all. She sent me a message too. They're here... "  My voice faded. My careful notes and Kara's poem were gone. Plus five hundred dollars. Frantically I tossed underwear and socks on top of the dresser. The drawer was empty.

Blanche nodded. “Amazingly, since grade school.”

“Beebs, what would you do to help a friend?”

“You know what they say. A friend will help you move. A good friend will help you move a body.”

Day #23 - The Brown Wallet read by Southern Gentleman

When I was ten, I found a wallet. There wasn't any money in it, but I knew how these things worked. I couldn't wait to return it and get my reward! All day I called the number from the brown leather wallet. Finally my dad relented and drove me to the owner's address. Once there we found a modest military housing unit with a torn screen door. As I rang the bell, my dad took three $20 bills and tucked them inside the wallet. Turns out my reward was getting to see one of life's true heroes in action. -- Ann Douglas Vaughan
